Bolivia Doesn’t Do Beginner Mode: The Ultimate 10-Day Expedition

OVERVIEW

This 10-day journey is a profound crossing through Bolivia’s most dramatic landscapes, connecting the high-altitude spine of the Andes with the wild, tropical lowlands of the East. From the Martian-like rock formations of La Paz to the prehistoric dinosaur tracks of Torotoro and the jaguar-filled wetlands of the Pantanal, this is the definitive itinerary for those who refuse to choose between the mountains and the Amazon.

You’ll begin in the high-altitude metropolis of La Paz, exploring the Martian-like rock formations of Valle de las Ánimas and the pre-Incan mysteries of Tiwanaku. Then, venture into the iconic Uyuni Salt Flats, traversing its vast white expanse before continuing south to the vibrant, flamingo-filled Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada).

The adventure then shifts east, descending from the Altiplano to the dinosaur territory of Torotoro National Park, where you’ll hike to massive canyons, waterfalls, and fossil sites. The journey culminates in the tropical lowlands, experiencing the unparalleled wildlife of the Bolivian Pantanal and the timeless, Jesuit-influenced culture and Baroque architecture of the Chiquitania region, before departing from Santa Cruz.

Is this tour for me?

Your Well-being: Navigating Altitude with Expert Care. If you are arriving directly from the coast, you may need up to a couple days to acclimatize. Dizziness, shortness of breath and headaches are common symptoms, but extended bouts of nausea and vomiting are not unheard of amongst those that have rushed their ascent. The locals swear by chewing coca leaves to help, and although they do relieve the symptoms, may cause you to fail a drug test. Anyone not already fully acclimatized is advised to pick up some Acetazolamide from the pharmacy in Uyuni before departure.

At nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, visitors may experience altitude sickness if they haven`t properly acclimatized. Symptoms include nausea, headaches, and insomnia among others.

Discuss various options for preventing and treating altitude sickness with your doctor before your trip.

Through homestays, shared meals, and hands-on environmental work, you will not only plant trees—you will plant intention, purpose, and a lasting bond with the land.

“Your Hands, Their Wisdom, One Purpose”

The Cycle of Life

o After breakfast with your host family, visit the native tree nursery.

o The Re-forestation Process: A practical workshop on why certain species are chosen, how to prepare the land, and the correct techniques for planting seedlings to ensure their survival.

• Afternoon: Becoming a Protector

o Action in the Field: Travel to a designated re-forestation area. Here, you will put your learning into practice. Each participant will plant several trees of their own.
o Naming Your Legacy: You will be encouraged to give a silent intention or a name to the trees you plant, creating a personal, eternal bond with the forest.

• Evening: Crafts and Culture

o Artisanal Heritage: A hands-on workshop with local artisans, perhaps in woodworking or textile weaving, which are famous in the Jesuit Mission towns. Create a small souvenir with your own hands.
o Fireside Stories: Share a final communal dinner. The community elders and your hosts share myths, legends, and songs of the Chiquitano people, deepening your understanding of the spiritual world you are now a part of.
